World Market Aluminum
Aluminum is a soft, durable, lightweight, malleable metal with a color ranging from silvery to dull grey, depending on the surface roughness. It has the symbol Al; its atomic number is 13.
Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust, and the third most abundant element found on earth, after oxygen and silicon.
Aluminum makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth’s solid surface. The chief source of aluminum/aluminium is bauxite ore.
Aluminum is known for its ability to resist corrosion. Structural components made from aluminium and its alloys are very important to the aerospace industry, transportation and building.
Because it has a reactive nature, it is useful as a catalyst or additive in chemical mixtures. One area aluminum is used in, is the explosives industry, it is being used in ammonium nitrate explosives to enhance blast power.
Aluminum is also a good thermal and electrical conductor, with a superconducting critical temperature of 1.2 kelvin and a critical magnetic field of about 100 gauss.
Even though aluminum is the most plentiful metal in the Earth's crust, it is rare in its free form.
Aluminum was at some time considered a precious metal more valuable than gold. Napoleon III gave a banquet where the most honored guests were given aluminum utensils, while the other guests had to make do with gold utensils.
